In the past 20 years, Beijing has developed rapidly in an all-round way. Now Beijing is a modern metropolis with charm of an ancient city in the East. As the capital of the People’s Republic of China, Beijing is one of the most popular and happening cities in the world. Being the second largest Chinese city by urban population after Shanghai, Beijing is the nation’s political, cultural and educational center. It is home to the headquarters of most of China's largest state-owned companies, and is a major hub for the national highway, expressway, railway, and high-speed rail networks.

Beijing is a generally safe and secure city but like anywhere around the world where there are larger crowds, there will be more opportunities for tourist scams and pickpocketing. Just be vigilant, aware of the surroundings and you will be alright.
