Side Event Future Risk, Future Earth

Thursday 17 October

Location: Room 401, CNCC Conference venue
Event Duration: 16:30-18:30

Extreme climate and weather events, associated disasters, and emergent risks are becoming increasingly critical in the context of global environmental change. They are a potential major threat to reaching the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and one of the most pressing challenges for future human well-being. We know that global risks are increasingly complex, uncertain, systemic, and dynamic. To tackle them effectively we will need strong, transdisciplinary understanding and action on global risks.

The side event is scheduled to be 1.5 hours long, starting at 4:30PM, Oct. 17, at CNCC, Beijing. First part of this event is to present the latest achievements and efforts of Future Earth Asian core projects and ISC on risk, disaster, and the human-natural components interactions at regional-to-global levels, address the challenges in regional sustainability, and provide an opportunity for face-to-face dialogue between social and physical communities of regional sustainability research. In this part, project representatives from Chinese National Committee for Future Earth (CNCFE, http://cnc-fe.cast.org.cn/), Integrated Research on Disaster Risk ( IRDR), Monsoon Asia Integrated Research for Sustainability (MAIRS-FE), Integrated Risk Governance Project (IRG-FE), and WCRP will be present their past works.

This session provides an open platform for scientific communities from across science disciplines on extreme events, disaster risk reduction and governance to exchange information, knowledge and explore to potential opportunities in collaborative research activities.

The invited speakers of risk side events are Dr. Qian Ye, director of IRG-FE, Dr. Wei Wan from MAIRS project office, Prof. Zhangcai Qin from Sun Yat-sen University to present Chinese National Committee for Future Earth, and Ms. Fang Lian, the science officer of IRDR.

The second part is the panel discussion, which will be joined about 10 invited experts including Drs. Qian Ye, Claas Teichmann, Juan Pedro Montavez, Zhangcai Qin, Wei Wan, Fredolin Tangang and Dr. Koji Dairaku, leading statistical research in CORDEX Asia from National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience, Tsukuba ,Japan. The panel discussion is designed to address the challenges we are facing in regional sustainable development, and consolidate the future collaboration between Future Earth and CORDEX/WCRP at regional level.

We are looking forward to meeting you there!
